Growing Wild & Wise
Welcome to Wild Roots Kids in Nature
We are a nature-based homeschool community for families who desire to protect and nurture childhood.
We believe children flourish when they are given the freedom to explore the outdoors, build meaningful friendships, develop practical skills, and grow in character through real-life experiences.
Our gatherings are intentionally screen-free and centered around nature, movement, mindfulness, play, outdoor skills and community. We believe childhood should be filled with muddy boots, climbing trees, curiosity, imagination, and unhurried time outdoors.
Our community welcomes families from many backgrounds who are willing to honor our shared values and Community Agreements. While we all come from different walks of life, we gather around a common purpose: Raising Kind, Capable, Resilient Children Who Love the Natural World.
Who is This Community For?
Wild Roots is designed for home school families with elementary-aged children, approximately ages 7–14.
Families must have at least one child who is seven years old or older to participate. Younger siblings are welcome, with the understanding that activities are planned for older children.
This is a family community, not a drop-off program. Parents or guardians are expected to remain present and actively participate throughout each gathering.
We believe children learn best by watching the adults around them model kindness, curiosity, and participation.
A Typical Gathering
Nature is our classroom.
We meet on Fridays, September - May, from 10:30 AM–2:30 PM, excluding the last Friday of each month and winter break. Most gatherings take place at a variety of parks and outdoor locations along the Wasatch east bench.
Our group meets outdoors rain, snow, or sunshine.
Please arrive dressed appropriately for the weather with layers, sturdy footwear, rain gear, or snow gear as needed.
Each Wild Roots gathering follows a consistent rhythm that gives children a sense of familiarity while leaving plenty of room for exploration, play, and discovery.
Community Game
We begin with a cooperative outdoor game that encourages movement, teamwork, creativity, and laughter.
Opening Circle
We gather together to welcome one another, share a community song, and prepare for the day.
Mindfulness & Movement
We connect with our bodies and surroundings through movement, breath, and mindfulness.
Nature Wander & Sit Spot
We move together to our activity location, then slow down and spend quiet time observing, noticing, journaling, sketching, or simply connecting with nature.
Shared Lunch
Families eat together while children have a chance to share something they noticed or discovered.
Nature Skill Focus
We finish with a hands-on nature skill, lesson, or special activity that changes throughout the season.
Free Play
We end our gathering with unstructured time for children to explore, play, connect, and follow their own curiosity.
Nature Skill Focus
Topics may include:
- Animal tracking
- Shelter building
- Rope skills and knots
- Navigation and orientation
- Tree and plant identification
- Fire safety
- Nature crafts
- Seasonal awareness
- Outdoor survival skills
- Stewardship of the land
This is what a typical day looks like at Wild Roots. Each day begins the same and has consistency.
Facilitators plan, prepare, and lead the day’s nature skills, activities, and topics, arriving with lessons and materials ready to go. Parents are asked to come ready to participate and, when needed, lend a hand with group support. We may also occasionally welcome special guest speakers to share their knowledge and skills.
*The Last Friday of each month that we gather we will wander and provide a nature craft
Community Agreements in Practice
Our gatherings are intentionally:
- Screen-free
- Nature-based
- Child-centered
- Family-centered
- Rooted in kindness and mutual respect
We ask that our gatherings remain free from:
- Gossip
- Political discussions
- Religious debate
- Divisive or confrontational conversations
Attendance & Commitment
Consistency helps children develop friendships, trust, and a sense of belonging.
The annual commitment is $100 per family, and $20 per child ages 4 and up.
If your family will miss a gathering, please let the group know.
Families who miss two gatherings without communication may forfeit their place in the community so that another family has the opportunity to join.
Community Fund
The annual family contribution is invested directly back into our community.
Funds may be used for:
- Nature activity supplies
- Outdoor skill-building materials
- Guest Speakers
- A year-end Wild Roots Community Camp Day, celebrating all we have learned and experienced together throughout the year.
Our Community Agreements
Rather than a long list of rules, our community is guided by timeless principles that encourage us to live with kindness, integrity, gratitude, and respect for ourselves, one another, and the natural world.
Together, we strive to practice:
🕊️ Kindness
We choose words and actions that do not cause harm. We treat ourselves, one another, animals, plants, and the natural world with care.
🌱 Truthfulness
We speak honestly and sincerely while remembering to be kind and compassionate with our words.
🤲 Respect
We respect one another’s time, belongings, ideas, bodies, and personal space. We ask before taking, touching, or using what belongs to someone else.
⚖️ Balance
We practice self-control and thoughtful choices. We notice how our actions affect ourselves, others, and our community.
🍂 Gratitude
We practice generosity and learn to be happy with what we have. We let go of comparison, jealousy, and the need to always have more.
💧 Care
We care for our bodies, our belongings, our shared spaces, and the natural world. We leave places better than we found them.
☀️ Contentment
We look for joy in the present moment and appreciate what is already here. We don’t need everything to be perfect to enjoy where we are.
🔥 Perseverance
We embrace challenges with courage and resilience. We keep trying, even when something is difficult, and we celebrate the effort it takes to grow.
🌙 Self-Reflection
We take time to notice our thoughts, feelings, and choices. We learn from our experiences and take responsibility when we make mistakes.
✨ Humility & Wonder
We remember that we are part of something much greater than ourselves. We approach the world with gratitude, curiosity, humility, and wonder.
These principles are not expectations of perfection. They are values we practice together—children and adults alike. We believe character is taught through example more than instruction, and that every day gives us another opportunity to practice, learn, and grow.
Our Mission
Our Mission is to create a community where childhood is protected, friendships are cultivated, and families support one another in raising resilient, compassionate, and capable children.
May our children know the names of the birds before the brands, the phases of the moon before the latest trends, the feeling of dirt beneath their fingernails, the confidence that comes from learning with their own hands, and the joy that grows from belonging to a caring community.
May they leave each gathering with muddy boots, full hearts, and memories that last a lifetime.
